Working harder isn't the only way to increase production. Often, physicians leave wRVUs on the table simply by under-coding or failing to capture all services provided.
1. Capture All Procedures
Did you do an ultrasound? A simple I&D? An ear lavage? Small procedures add up.
2. Code by Time When Appropriate
For complex patients where counseling dominates the visit (>50%), or under 2021+ E/M guidelines where total time can determine the level, ensure you are documenting the total time spent (including pre-charting and note writing on the same day). A Level 5 (99215) pays significantly more than a Level 4.
3. Use Modifiers Correctly
Modifier -25: If you perform a significant, separately identifiable E/M service on the same day as a procedure, use Modifier -25 to get paid for both the visit and the procedure.
