How to Negotiate Your RVU Contract

Most physician contracts today include a productivity component. If you don't understand the levers of an RVU-based contract, you could be leaving tens of thousands of dollars on the table.

1. The Conversion Factor (CF)

This is the dollar amount you get paid per wRVU.
Tip: Compare your offered CF to regional MGMA data. A $2 difference per wRVU on 5,000 wRVUs is a $10,000 difference in annual income.

2. The Threshold

Many contracts pay a base salary which covers X number of wRVUs. You only earn a bonus after crossing that threshold.
Trap: Setting a threshold so high (e.g., 90th percentile) that it is mathematically impossible to reach given your clinic hours.

3. Ramp-Up Period

New physicians take time to build a panel. Negotiate a "guaranteed salary" for 1-2 years with no RVU penalty, but *with* the ability to earn a bonus if you exceed targets early.
