Transitioning from residency to attending life comes with a steep learning curve, especially regarding compensation. Here is the crash course on RVUs that residency didn't teach you.
You Are Paid for Production
Unlike residency's fixed salary, most attending jobs pay based on what you *do*. The metric for "doing" is the Work Relative Value Unit (wRVU). Every CPT code has a value attached to it.
- Level 3 Visit (99213): ~1.30 wRVUs
- Level 4 Visit (99214): ~1.92 wRVUs
Start Tracking Day 1
Do not trust the hospital's automated reports implicitly. Billing errors happen. Claims get denied. If a claim is denied, you often get 0 RVUs for that work. Tracking your own cases allows you to audit your paycheck.
